Mother, Son Suffer Severe Burns In Cabin Propane Tank Explosion

BALKAN TOWNSHIP, Minn. — A mother and her son are being treated for severe burns after a propane tank exploded inside a cabin in Balkan Township.

The accident was reported around 10:45 a.m. Sunday in the 11600 Block of Countryside Lane.

“Investigation of the incident revealed that a 20lb propane tank had been attached to a heater inside the cabin, and was being used to heat the cabin,” according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.

The 37-year-old mother and her 12-year-old son were able to walk to a nearby neighbor to wait for help. Officials said the two received burns “over large portions of their bodies.”  They were taken to Hibbing Hospital for treatment.

The cause of the explosion is being investigated by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshal.

Names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of family.
