UPDATE: One Building Destroyed, One Heavily Damaged due to Fire in Downtown Eveleth Sunday

EVELETH, Minn. – Over a dozen fire department worked together to battle a fire in downtown Eveleth Sunday morning.

Friends of the Northland Firewire say the initial call came in around 5:30 at an apartment building next to Johnny D’s Bar in the 300 block of Grant Avenue.

At least 18 departments spent time on scene, and the need for resources started to exceed what was available in Eveleth.  This included the need for water transports from Gilbert and Virginia and an air trailer from the 148th Air National Guard’s fire department.

One building was destroyed and the other, Johnny D’s, suffered extensive damage.

There is no word of any injuries due to the fire.

The Mesabi Tribune adds one person and a dog were able to get out of the apartment building.

The Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting about a half dozen people displaced by the fire.

The Minnesota State Fire Marshall’s Office is on scene to investigate a cause.
