Arrest Made in Death of Adam Johnson

DULUTH, Minn. — A little more than two weeks after Adam Johnson died after being cut by a skate blade, local police have arrested a man on suspicion of manslaughter.

In a release issued by the South West Yorkshire Police Department today, the man arrested was not identified but remains in police custody.

Local police opened an investigation into the incident almost immediately after the incident happened.

In the release, Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfell said: “We have been speaking to highly specialised experts in their field to assist in our enquiries and continue to work closely with the health and safety department at Sheffield City Council, which is supporting our ongoing investigation,”

Horsfell also said “(We)…request that members of the public refrain from comment and speculation which could hinder this process. Our thoughts remain with all affected by this devastating incident as enquiries continue.”

In an interview with South West News Service given shortly after her nephew’s death, Kari Johnson said she believes the actions were careless.

“We are absolutely calling for a complete investigation. You don’t take your leg and kick somebody and cut their throat. I’m sorry. We were watching the game in real-time and we did witness what happened. Horrific is the word to describe. My nephew was 6ft tall, and whether you lost your balance or not, to have that leg come up that high and do a kicking motion like he did, that is just unacceptable.” Kari Johnson

FOX 21 reached out to Adam’s former coaches and others close to him but did not receive any statements.

The South Yorkshire Police Department has said it believes the investigation into Adam Johnsons’ death will take some time.
