Coffee Conversation: St. Luke’s on the Importance of Foot Care as a Diabetic
DULUTH, Minn. — November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. More than 37 million Americans live with diabetes, which is nearly 1 in 4 adults. One of the conditions that can occur because of diabetes is foot ulcers. That’s where St. Lukes Hospital in Duluth comes into play.
St. Luke’s Advanced Wound Care & Hyperbaric Center can help with the wound-healing process. Clinical Supervisor Maija Kaarto joined FOX21 on the morning newscast Monday to shed light on the importance of checking your feet regularly, especially if you’re diabetic.
About 15% of diabetes patients will get a foot ulcer in their lifetime and 40% of people with a healed ulcer will get another one within a year. If wounds aren’t properly cared for, people are at a higher risk of having an amputation.
