Duluth Police Department Welcomes Nine New Officers

DULUTH, Minn. — The Duluth Police Department welcomed nine new police officers, aiding the departments current officer shortage.

The recruits were sworn in during a ceremony this afternoon.

Family and friends pinned each new officers badge onto their uniforms.

Duluth Chief of Police, Mike Ceynowa says since Fall of 2022, the department has added 18 officers to its staff, which is about half of the amount they need to fill the shortage.

The newcomers will now join another officer on patrol to complete their training.

“These recruits still have to go through our training program, the field training program out in the car with an experienced officer, so we’re about 4-5 months away from where they’re on solo patrol, that we can add them to our count of available officers to add to the street,” said Chief Ceynowa.

Apart from the new officers, two current Investigators were promoted to Patrol Sergeant during the ceremony.
