Hmong New Year Celebrated in Duluth

New Yearstill

DULUTH, Minn. –Duluth community members gathered Saturday to celebrate the Hmong New Year at Coppertop Church.

It has been nearly 50 years since Hmong in Minnesota began resettling in the United States after being refugees from the Vietnam War.

Now a Hmong New Year celebration is hosted each year in Duluth. The event was free and open to the public.

Members of the Hmong community celebrated by singing, dancing and play instruments. Hmong UMD Students even put on a fashion show.

“Just seeing the fact that, you have a lot of the elders, passing the torch to the younger ones, just seeing the youth from UMD just being here brings joy to our culture,” said Sawm Vang, New Years Celebrator.

Hmong elders began preparing food for the event a day in advance.

The food included egg rolls, purple rice, veggie stir fry and other dishes.
