Three Men Safe After Breaking Through Ice On Upper Red Lake
BELTRAMI COUNTY, Minn. — Three men are safe after breaking through the ice on Upper Red Lake when returning from fishing on Thursday.
The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office says the call came in just before 8 p.m. Upon investigation it was found an all-terrain vehicle and trailer along with 3 people had broken through the ice. 2 of them fell in the water but were able to get back on top of the ice.
Authorities say the men reported heading the wrong direction when returning to a resort and broke through an ice pressure ridge.
No injuries were reported.
The Sheriff’s Office says ice conditions vary due to the warm weather. They say to use extreme caution when going on lakes and to check the ice thickness frequently.
This accident comes less than a week after 35 anglers were rescued after being stranded on a chunk of ice from the same lake. There was also another incident of a small plane breaking through the ice on Upper Red Lake as well. There were no injuries in either of these incidents.
