Locally Produced Documentary “Duluth For Mandela” Premiers at Zeitgeist

DULUTH, Minn. — A locally produced documentary had its premiere at Zeitgeist yesterday and drew in a large crowd.

The film “Duluth for Mandela: A Northland Celebration” is based on community events that took place in 2018, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nelson Mandela, a South African liberation leader.

Director and producer Gerri Williams wanted to include the Duluth community in her film.

“Duluth for Mandela” was produced by MMAD Studios on the UMD campus.

“What kept me going was Mandela,” said Williams. “I say the magic of Mandela resonated with so many people because of the integrity of his life, because of his life experience, because of his principles of reconciliation.”

The movie will also be screened at UMD for a Shades of Africa festival on March 1st.
