Man Who Died After ATV Fell Through Ice On Pike Bay Identified
CASS LAKE, Minn. — The man who died after his ATV fell through the ice on Pike Bay on Friday has been identified.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says the report came in at 11:15 a.m. Friday that 82-year-old Thomas Steele, of Bemidji had been traveling on the ice when it broke through and went into the water.
Steele was pulled from the water by witnesses who were fishing. Lifesaving efforts took place immediately and continued when authorities arrived.
Police say Steele was transported by airboat to an ambulance and then brought to a local Cass Lake hospital where he later died.
The passenger Mark Jacobson, age 56 also of Bemidji who was also in the water was treated on scene.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office and MN DNR want to remind everyone of ice safety guidelines. These are:
- Always wear a life jacket or float coat on the ice (except when in a vehicle).
- Carry ice picks, rope, an ice chisel, and a tape measure.
- Check ice thickness at regular intervals; conditions can change quickly.
- Bring a cell phone or personal locator beacon.
- Do not go out alone; let someone know about trip plans and expected return time.
- Before heading out, inquire about conditions and known hazards with local experts.
