Portman Youth Hockey Hosts 2nd Annual Great Skate Event

DULUTH, Minn. — Portman Youth Hockey was finally able to hit the ice for their 2nd annual Great Skate Event.

Skaters and parents gathered at the Portman Community Center for the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year.

Last year the Great Skate raised over $10,000, helping fund the costs of equipment, facility management and tournaments.

The lack of cold temps led the Great Skate to be postponed twice. but parents and volunteers were able to help make ice ahead of Fridays event.

“Everybody’s smiling, everybody’s so happy, so it feels really, really great to be able to deliver that. Even though it happened later than we anticipated it happening, the mood here is just a really joyous one and so we’re really thankful,” said Parent Volunteer Laura Johnson.

Ahead of the great skate, players receive donations from friends, family and community members.

100% of all donations benefit Portman Hockey. This year a goal of $8,000 was set.
