Love-A-Pet Adoption Event Takes Place In October

NORTHLAND – This year, several Northland organizations are partnering to host the first-ever virtual pet adoption event.
The Love-A-Pet Adoption Event is taking place during the whole month of October and organizers are excited to be able to provide loving homes for pets in need.
Miller Hill Subaru is sponsoring the event, and is partnering with organizations like Animal Allies in Duluth, the Babinski Foundation in Pequot Lakes and Lake County Humane Society in Two Harbors.
13 years ago, the first adoption event took place and 20 pets were adopted in a matter of four hours. Each year, they added shelters and vendors, and organizers say it’s been something people have looked forward to in the fall.
“Many many Subaru owners are dog owners and so being an animal lover myself, I thought how cool would it be to just test the waters and see if we could make an event happen and animal allies was more than willing to try,” said Beth Nimens, the marketing director at Miller Hill Subaru.
There have been over 700 adoptions that have taken place over the past 13 years. So far this year, being a virtual event, six animals have been adopted to their forever homes and thirteen are waiting to be united or haven’t been picked up at the shelter yet.
“Seeing nationally, people are wanting pets in their homes now that people are being quarantined or having to spend more time at home so there’s actually a shortage of a lot of adoptable animals across the nation,” said Jennifer Julsrud, the development officer at Animal Allies.
And what does it take to be a good pet owner?
“Someone that’s loving, patient, and willing to you know, take the time to take the time to care for the animal and provide a nice home,” said Julsrud.
And it should be noted, many adoption fees have been reduced during this event.
