Finnish Sliding Fest ‘Laskiainen’ Returns for 86th year
PALO, Minn.– The Finnish Sliding Festival, also known as ‘Laskiainen’ returned for its 86th year in Palo Minnesota this weekend.
With sleds at the ready people from across the northland gathered to enjoy the annual event. The festival isn’t just about the outdoor sledding fun, it’s also about celebrating the Finnish heritage. Dozens of vendors displayed their crafts, and there was plenty of food, including the popular pea soup, which organizers say sells out every year.
“It’s a community event, it’s very traditional, we try to maintain the Finnish tradition, we don’t pay for parking, a lot of stuff is free,” said Sharon Niemi, Laskiainen organizer.
The festival is run entirely by volunteers, and many help out each year. The event took place at the Loon Lake Community Center, and on Saturday fans and players filled the gym for multiple basketball games.
