Comedian Maria Bamford Talks Duluth Comedy Festival, Book Signing

Bamford performs at the NorShor Theatre Saturday before holding a book signing at Zenith Bookstore on Sunday

DULUTH, Minn. — Duluth-raised comedian Maria Bamford is headlining the Duluth Comedy Festival at the NorShor Theatre this weekend.  She’s also holding a book signing at Zenith Bookstore.

FOX 21’s Dan Hanger talked with Bamford about her upcoming visit.  And, well, she was her usual authentic self, of course.Duluth Comedy Fest Logo Copy

“I am a mess Dan hanger. I will, I will guarantee you that,” Bamford said as she leaned her eye into her web cam for the Zoom interview.

The Duluth Comedy Festival is a two-day event this Friday and Saturday. Drew Lynch opens on Friday. Bamford headlines on Saturday.

Bamford said she’s got some new material to share. And if you didn’t know, she is known for her starring role in “Lady Dynamite” on Netflix, Target commercials, voice work and of course her quirky, self-deprecating comedy based on her life, including her mental health struggles over the years.

Bamford said she loves getting back to Duluth whenever she can.

“Oh, I love Duluth. My parents, Maryland and Joel Bamford have since passed. But I love Duluth so much. My sister lives there. So I’m going to be staying with her up in Kenwood, near the Kenwood mall. I’m going stay a couple extra days, go to the Zenith Bookstore, do a signing of the book. And yeah, just generally have a great time. Hopefully I get to see Gaelynn Lea, the famous singer, songwriter. She and her husband Paul have become friends over the years. And so yeah, just grateful to be able to go to Duluth for any reason.”

Bamford will at the Zenith Bookstore in West Duluth Sunday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. for a book signing on her New York Times bestseller, “Sure, I’ll join your cult.”Maria Book Signing Zeneth

Bamford said – you guessed it – a comedic take on her ups and downs of her life.

“I have no qualms in telling people about my personal life for whatever reason. I’m not sure why that is. And it also turns out, it’s a cash cow,” Bamford laughed.

Bamford also has a new comedy special out now on Apple TV. She said it takes her about three years to create a new hour of comedy because she does it all on her own without the help of writers.
