Gov. Tony Evers Signs Into Law New State Election Maps

SUPERIOR, Wisc. — Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers was in Superior Monday afternoon taking what could be considered a “victory lap” around the state as he signed into law new election maps.

Evers said, “I promised when I ran. But one of the most important ones, if not the most important one was to make sure that we had a process for determining maps and making that happen, the whole redistricting issue that you do every 10 years. And the second one was to have fair maps. Well, after 1846 days folks, we have fair maps.”

Last December the Wisconsin Supreme Court concluded that the legislative maps in the state were heavily gerrymandered to favor Republicans. The court ruled the maps unconstitutional and ordered new maps to be created before the 20-24 election.

The justices reviewed four map alternatives and chose the one drawn by Evers. “At the end of the day, everybody is going to have a fair share and have an opportunity to win and make your issues to the, to the voters, the voters are, the voters are the winners here. It’s not the Democratic Party it’s not the Republican Party. It is the voters of the state of Wisconsin.”

Evers went on to say that this is great news for the entire state. After 50 years of the old map, now both the Republicans and Democrats will have a much more level playing field.
