Northern Star: Abe Soumis
Senior holds Hermantown's all-time scoring record
HERMANTOWN, Minn.- On Monday, Abe Soumis broke the all-time scoring record for the Hermantown boys’ basketball team when he put up 48 points against Chisago Lakes. For anyone who has watched the Hawks in the last two seasons, this didn’t come as a surprise.
“You know, the thing about Abe is that he’s that kind of kid that every coach just wants to have on the team.” Head Coach Andy Fenske has coached several electric scorers in his eight seasons leading the Hawks. However, none of them were able to put the ball in the hoop as much as Soumis.
“He’s really kind of shouldered the burden of being the guy on the team and the one that we need to step up and do some big things.” says Fenske “We always knew he was going to be a special player. And just in the sense of the Soumis family, there have had all three of the other brothers there. They’ve been spectacular kids and just awesome kids to have in our program. ”
Abe has been shattering single-game and single-season records at a blistering pace in the 2023-24 season, including when he scored a program-high 55 points in a game against Bemidji.
“It doesn’t really cross my mind that much,” admits Soumis. “Obviously, it’s cool to see all these records, but at the end of the day, it’s just about getting our team winning and potentially making it to state.”
Take it from Abe: He and his teammates are solely focused on winning. Plus, after claiming the section title over the last two seasons, he and his fellow seniors are making sure that streak doesn’t end under their watch.
“We lost some section games, but I think coming into playoffs here when everybody’s healthy that we’re still the team to (beat).” says Soumis. “A lot of our offense revolves around our seniors and just their overall play, and going back the last two years, we know that it’s not going to be as easy this year to get there. But it’s definitely a possibility and a goal that we’re striving to get.”
