President Of Northland College Responds To Institution’s Potential Closure

ASHLAND, Wis. –  The president of Ashland’s Northland College said it was a perfect storm that led to Monday’s urgent plea to the community for financial help.

The liberal arts institution of 132 years announced it will begin closing down this summer if it does not raise $12 million in the next three weeks.

President Chad Dayton spoke with FOX 21 Wednesday. He declined to be interviewed on camera, but in a phone interview said the current operational model is not sustainable.  As for the surprising and abrupt announcement, he said several issues came together, including spending down the college’s endowment fund.

“Over the last few years, as enrollment at Northland has declined, and in general costs have increased,” said Dayton. “The institution has used all of its tools and resources, both for donations and philanthropic contributions to the college, but also its endowment as a resource to continue operations.  And unfortunately, we find ourselves in a position where our endowment is no longer an operational resource for the institution. And that brings us to this moment.”

Dayton said enrollment at Northland College has dropped by 25 percent in the last six years.  This year, the college has about 450 students, 52 faculty members, 84 staff and 35 contracted employees.

If the $12 million is successfully reached by April 3, Dayton said discussions will move forward to transition to a new Northland College.  But if they cannot raise the money, he said the college will begin the process of closing down after spring graduation and the end of this academic year
