Pi Day Brings Math Lovers Together at UMD
DULUTH, Minn. — Math lovers are celebrating Pi Day at UMD.
The day is celebrated on March 14th because that is the first few numbers of the mathematical constant 3.14. The event Thursday featured pizza, fruit pies, trivia, and prizes.
A mathematics professor says Pi Day gives them a reason to get together, eat some free food, but also learn some history.
“I think it’s really cool number because actually when you write down its decimal expansion it never comes into a pattern, and it never stops. So, it’s kind of interesting to just think about what’s going on with that infinity of digits but also to look back on the history I think is a lot of fun,” said James Sellers, Professor of Mathematics at UMD.
