Plans For Superior Street Reconstruction Displayed

DULUTH, Minn. -The City of Duluth held its fourth and final public meeting on the reconstruction of West Superior Street between Carlton and West Michigan Street. Residents and Businesses were looking at the plans of the latest design for the multi-year project.

At three earlier meetings, the city’s planning department has been listening to residents and businesses in the Lincoln Park Craft District. The most recent plans have been updated to try to meet the needs and wants that have been voiced to the planning department.

“There’s like as many people want more parking as want less parking on the corridor,” said Duluth’s Senior Transportation Planner, James Gittemeier. “I’d say overall, this design is meeting, what we’ve been hearing from the community.  You know,  no one design would work perfectly for everybody. So there’s adjustments that we’ve had to make.”

Neighbors and community groups have said they want a corridor that is nice to walk along and gather in. The design calls for trees to be planted so that when they grow they’ll provide a canopy for walkers.

Businesses worked with the planners to ensure there was enough room for delivery trucks and semis to be able to reach them.

With the design now basically agreed on, the next step will be engineering design work.

Actual construction is planned to start in 20-26 and be completed by 20-28.
