Adrian Gledhill Promoting Fitness Through Young Athletes Foundation
"You promote by being what you want in your kids"
DULUTH, Minn.- Superior’s Adrian Gledhill knows better than most that keeping a healthy lifestyle is easier said than done. Now, she’s hoping to instill that knowledge onto her kids and other families with children.
“I’ve been overweight my entire life,” says Gledhill, who competed on season three of the hit weight loss competition show “The Biggest Loser.” “One thing that always helped me stop being so overweight was to just keep moving. So, I want that for my kids to I want them to have lifelong health and fitness.”
Gledhill and her four children are now involved in the Young Athletes Foundation, a program set up by Grandma’s Marathon. “David and Grace have been running the Saturday and Wednesday night at the races since they were three years old, and now they’re big and they’re doing the adult races with me. Now, Porter and Volmer are also doing the younger races and I’m hoping that this organization just gets them involved and gets them active and hopefully is a lifelong activity for them. We just absolutely love this organization.”
After participating in the St. Fennessy 4K, Gledhill and her kids are one race into the KP Challenge, which also includes the Fitger’s 5K (April 20) and the Park Point 5-Miler (July 18).
“Throughout my entire weight loss journey, I have been part of the series, the different races, and this year, I really want to ensure that we get the kids involved.” says Gledhill in regard to her own children. “The kids and I have been doing a lot of training, and sometimes our training is six miles, and sometimes it’s 10 miles. And so of course I get push-back (from them). But we make it fun, we make sure that there’s some kind of incentive. At the end, we’re going to watch a movie, you get to pick dinner, you can take the day off of chores. So, we always just keep it fun.”
Gledhill’s health and fitness journey hasn’t been without its challenges. For example, she gained back all the weight she lost while competing on “The Biggest Loser”. It wasn’t until finding a diet and workout regiment that worked for her she was able to lose weight, as well as keep it off for good.
“When I gained that weight back, I just hid,” she admitted. “I felt like I let everybody down. And to be able to find something that actually works is just it’s I hope that I can share it with other people and maybe it could work for you too. My life is a lot more gentle than when I was on ‘The Biggest Loser.’ ‘The Biggest Loser’ is like go hard, run hard run, run, run. And today to make it more sustainable, It’s a lot more gentle.”
Gledhill says teaching yourself to live a healthy lifestyle is the first step towards helping your
kids do the same. “”My kids didn’t automatically gravitate towards this. So, I just kept being just doing my best to be healthy and they will eventually gravitate towards that. If I’m out running, my kids aren’t necessarily going to run six miles with me, but they can walk. You promote by being what you want in your kids.”
