Superior Girls Lacrosse Prepping for First-Ever Home Game
Superior's roster is about a 50/50 split of players who have played club lacrosse before or have never played the sport at all.
SUPERIOR, Wis.- Back in February, the Superior school board voted to make girls and boys lacrosse a co-curricular sport.
Fast forward to now, and the two teams are gearing up for their first-ever home games.
The Superior girls squad is led by Dustin Anderson, a former longtime soccer coach who’s also played lacrosse recreationally.
His roster is about a 50/50 split of players who have played club lacrosse before or have never played the sport at all.
Anderson says this inaugural season is all about development.
“We’re building and creating that culture. Not only what Superior high school has had with various other sports and their traditions. We’re taking pieces of those and using the girls that have played this sport, those veterans and taking their expertise to teach the younger girls, mentor the younger girls. We have a lot of these girls that have played other sports. They said hey we want to try this sport. What a great way to do it in it’s first season. So that we can hopefully build from those girls for years to come,” said Anderson.
For those who have been playing the sport for awhile, it means even more to be able to represent their school.
“We have way more girls coming in. A lot of us are closer now. There’s more team bonding and bus rides, weight lifting in the morning. It just means a lot to have the games count for us,” said senior defender Isabel Curtis.
“I first started in 7th grade. I actually quit soccer to play and it was like an intramural that me and my friends did. I joined the team that year and I really liked it. I knew it was not as popular so I wanted to like join something new,” added senior midfielder Miyah Voltzke.
“I think it’s a little bit of both. Like we really want to win but we’re just kind of learning. Seeing how it goes and then taking it from there,” said junior defender Addy Golat.
The Spartans will host Duluth Marshall on Thursday at 5 PM.
