Duluth Police Ask Pro-Palestine Encampment To Leave Civic Center

DULUTH, Minn. — A small encampment In the Duluth Civic Center courtyard got a visit from the Duluth Police Department Wednesday evening.

The two officers told the pro-Palestinian protesters that it’s against the law to set up camps sites on the property.

Wednesday marked the first time protesters have taken to the streets of Duluth to set up an encampment of any kind Involving Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza.  Img 4432

Duluth police told about a dozen protesters that free speech is allowed, but not the setup of tents (Click the video above to watch the exchange).

One of the protesters, who said he wasn’t sure if he’d camp out overnight, believes it’s important to speak up about the innocent Palestinians being killed in the war in Gaza by Israel.

“I believe that I should be out here protesting and helping, believing that I’m helping people. And with the genocide that Israel is causing on these people is — it’s way too much,” said Louis Switzer, a protester.

The two-tent encampment, which is on federal property, according to a city official, included a few signs Wednesday evening, a case of water, a microphone and speaker.

As of 9 p.m. Wednesday, the encampment remained.

Meanwhile, around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, FOX 21 received a news release called “Duluth Palestine Solidarity Camp.”

The group said it was organizing an encampment at the Rose Garden.

The release said they “demand” city and state divestment and boycott of Israel. They welcome people who align with that vision to join them while “being caring stewards of the Rose Garden during this time.”

The city of Duluth released a statement Wednesday:

“The City of Duluth is aware of people gathering at Priley Circle and the Rose Garden. The demonstrations at this time remain peaceful and are a respectful expression of the parties’ First Amendment Rights. Currently, there is no concern for public safety. We will continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.”
