City Announces Proposed Changes to Skyline Parkway

DULUTH, Minn. — The City of Duluth hosted a listening session at Lincoln Park Middle School Monday evening to unveil proposed alternative modifications to W Skyline Pkwy in front of Enger Tower, as an attempt to increase non-motorized access, decrease speed and increase public safety.

A city engineer says the Skyline Parkway loop could temporarily turn into a one-way road, this would allow for a lane just for pedestrians and bikers.

Additional signage and road striping enhancements are also being proposed. The connecting Hank Jensen Drive would remain a two-way street during the trial.

Tonight’s meeting comes after a pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle in February, and a driver died after rolling off the embankment– also in February.

“What were hoping to get some feedback on tonight is these things that we can do in what I’m calling short term,” said Joe Jurewicz, Senior Engineer, City of Duluth. So Hank Jensen will remain a two-way street, but the Skyline loop will be westbound to eastbound, just one way.”

The city has added three new speed limit signs to the area, and crews have cleared trees and brush along skyline for better sightlines for drivers and pedestrians.
