UMD Thrower Eli Bicek to Become 3rd Bulldog to Participate in Outdoor Hammer Throw Championship

Bicek just recently placed first at the NSIC Conference championship.

DULUTH, Minn.- UMD senior thrower Eli Bicek ended a 10-year drought, becoming the first men’s Bulldog to qualify for the Outdoor Championships since 2014.

When he competes on Thursday, he’ll officially be the 3rd UMD thrower in program history to participate in the outdoor hammer throw championship.

Bicek, who recently just placed first at the NSIC conference championship with a throw of 60.5 meters, said it came down to the wire in order to earn a spot in the national tournament.

“It’s super cool because it wasn’t really, I mean I always was thinking about nationals but it wasn’t really in the cards going into the conference meet. I was seven meters off but then had a huge P’R, broke the school record but still wasn’t close enough to nationals. Fought for it on the last throw and got it,” said Bicek.

Bicek gets going in Emporia, Kansas on Thursday at 12:30 PM.
