DULUTH, Minn. — Farm Lande just outside of Duluth is kicking off growing season with plant pickup and the chance to meet the farm’s six new fluffy residents!

Memorial Day Weekend is largely considered the start of growing season in Minnesota and its no different at Farm Lande. Duluthians who placed their pant orders in advance were stopping by to pickup native perennials, herbs, and vegetable plants.

They also got to meet the newest arrival at Farm Lande, six sheep. The three mama sheep and their newly named babies — Strawberry, Sprout, and Garbanzo — will play an important role. The sheep will help control grass, improve soil quality, and provide fiber. Farm owner Claire Lande say for her, its all about balance.

“Something that we try to do here is maintain balance in all aspects of life and work and the things we’re growing on the farm,” Lande said. “We have a huge variety of plants and animals and I think that’s just important.”

Farm Lande is just one of over a thousand farms in the Minnesota Grown Program. Minnesota Grown focuses on connecting local producers and consumers, according to Marketing Manager Rachel Wandrei.

“We are just so excited about all of the local producers around the state and particularly the growing numbers of farms up here on the North Shore that have wonderful products that people can get their hands on,” Wandrei said. “And particularly, right now, the growing season getting going, this is the weekend. do start your gardening. So we do really want to encourage people to support local farms and growers and get their hands on some really hearty Minnesota plants.”

Minnesotans looking for farms, garden centers, farmers markets and more, can go to minnesotagrown.com and look through its directory of producers. And, if you’re headed to the Duluth Farmers Market on Sunday, keep an eye own for Minnesota Grown signs and Farm Lande.
