After 9 Seasons at UMD, Maura Crowell Accepts Head Coaching Position at Dartmouth

Crowell had an overall record of 174-115-28 with the Bulldogs.

DULUTH, Minn.- When the UMD women’s hockey team enters play next season, they’ll be doing so with a new head coach.

After nine seasons, Maura Crowell is departing the program and will be the next head coach at Dartmouth College.

Crowell led the Bulldogs to four straight NCAA tournament appearances, a NCAA title runner-up finish in 2022, two NCAA Frozen Fours, and four NCAA Regional Finals and Quarterfinal appearances.

“That’s the hardest part. It’s the people here, especially my players. You know how I feel about them, how they feel about me. It’s just been unbelievable. That’s the hardest part. The whole time considering this is weighing those options out and you know you have to make mature decisions sometimes and put the family first,” said Crowell.

UMD Director of Athletics Forrest Karr said that the university will begin a national search for Crowell’s replacement and Bulldog associate head coach Laura Schuler will serve as the program’s interim head coach.

“I’m a big believer in doing more than less. I’ve had a lot of searches over the year where I’ve done 16 video interviews. Because you never know about that person who’s resume is maybe not as robust. But they’re maybe a potential hidden gem so we want to make sure that we just don’t look at somebody’s resume and throw them out of the pile and not give them a chance,” added Karr.

Crowell had an overall record of 174-115-28, which included three-straight 20-plus win seasons.
