How to Avoid Dangers of Downed Power Lines
DULUTH, Minn. — Now what can you do if you come across downed power lines? Experts say the first thing to always do is to assume they are energized.
Whenever the power lines are on top of a car or lying on the side of the road. It’s best to always avoid lines and call 9-1-1. Emergency responders or power company utility crews are trained to handle downed and potentially hazardous lines.
Never trim the branches of trees that intersect with active power lines. If the line hanging is in reach while standing below or driving underneath, call. If a power line looks low, it’s best to avoid it.
But what should you do if lines snap over the road and land on top of your vehicle?
“If you are ever in a vehicle that has a power line over the top of it, you’d want to stay in it. Unless you absolutely are in danger to get out,” said Tim Laeupple, the manager of line operations for Minnesota Power. “If you have to get out, you want to open your door and stand on the edge of it, then you’d want to jump far enough and land on two feet and then shuffle away from it until you’re safe.”
Downed lines can remain active and energized even if there are no sparks, smoke, or fire. The best thing to always do is remain a safe distance, dial 9-1-1, and look out for others who may stumble upon one.
