Sanclemente, Gomez Take Home Grandma’s Marathon Wheelchair Titles.
Weather forces several to cancel
DULUTH, Minn.- Before this year’s Grandma’s Marathon runners crossed the finish line, competitors in the wheelchair division earned their place in the spotlight.
Luis Francisco Sanclemente of Colombia won the men’s wheelchair division, finishing with a personal best time of 1:22:07. It was 2:05 away from the course record, set by Aaron Pike in 2022. Sanclemente finished just 17 seconds ahead of Miguel Vergara of Chula Vista, California.
In the women’s wheelchair division, Ivonna Reyes Gomez of Mexico won with a time of 1:48:24. This is the second time Gomez has claimed victory at Grandma’s, with her first win coming in 2021 (2:06:47). The women’s course record was set by Susannah Scaroni back in 2022 at 1:27:31.
Several wheelchair competitors chose to back out of the race due to the weather conditions and the effect it could have on their wheelchairs’ tires.
