Damaged Stained Glass Windows to be Reinstalled at Sacred Heart Music Center

Workers will reinstall the windows beginning at 10:30 a.m. Thursday

It’s been more than a year since a truck slammed into the side of Sacred Heart Music Center, causing extensive damage to the historic Duluth landmark, including a set of priceless stained glass windows.

Workers at Sacred Heart Music Center, will lift into place and install the 120-year-old stained glass windows beginning at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 27.

The Central Hillside landmark sustained the damage as a result of the August 27, 2015 crash involving a pick-up truck which lost its brakes while traveling down 2nd Avenue West. No one was seriously injured in the crash, and insurance did not cover repair costs.

A large hole in the northeast annex was fixed immediately after the incident, but restoring the stained glass windows was more costly and time consuming.

The foundation of the former Sacred Heart Church was laid in 1894, and the building served as a catholic cathedral for almost 90 years. The church was closed and deconsecrated in 1985.

A non-profit group took over the building a year later and it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building was renamed Sacred Heart Music Center and is used as a music performance space, educational facility, and event center.
