Hundreds Of Volunteers Take Part In Day Of Caring Event In Duluth
DULUTH, Minn. — Hundreds of volunteers were out in the Duluth community Wednesday lending their time to help out local organizations.
This year’s Head of the Lakes United Way’s Day of Caring event was about tackling over 20 summer projects. One group of volunteers helped organize the Denfeld Hunter Hut. It is a student supply closet where teens can grab free resources such as clothes, food, and school supplies. Staff says having help is essential to keeping the closet in order.
“So, it’s been like a 3-year process of making this space specifically work and have a set up that works. So, being able to play around with the space and then have extra hands to actually make that happen and like make that vision come true with the support is good,” said Saraiya Piantek, Site Coordinator for Full-Service Community School.
One big event at the Damiano Center is the annual Day of Caring picnic. About 300 people stopped by for a meal. The organizer says it is important to feed as many people as they can.
“A lot of don’t get a chance to get a nice hot people. A lot of people are just walking around hungry all the time so, it’s a good thing they have somewhere to come and eat,” said Flora Woodfork, Kitchen Manager at the Damiano Center.
Other non-profits that were helped included Valley Youth Center, CASDA, and Solid Rock Men’s Shelter.
