Sweeney’s Power Highlights Huskies First Half of Season

Sweeney is tied for 2nd in the Northwoods League with eight home runs.

DULUTH, Minn.- The first half of the season is almost coming to a close for the Duluth Huskies.

Among the highlights from the first month include a first baseman and designated hitter with plenty of power.

That first baseman and DH being MJ Sweeney, who currently is tied for 2nd in the Northwoods League with eight home runs.

Sweeney is in his first summer with the team.

He says in the past he was in his own head too much. Now, he’s doing the exact opposite and the results are showing.

“It’s just really going out here, getting my work in early. I like hitting before the games with Charlie, before everyone is here. Just going out there and having as much fun as I can. Not putting pressure on myself. Just sticking to my game and just going out here and trying to have more fun than anyone else on the field,” said Sweeney.

Sweeney gets plenty of coaching from Marcus Pointer on the field. But he also has quite the coach at home, that being former big leaguer and five-time all-star, Mike Sweeney.

To MJ though, he’s just dad.

“He’s been my hitting coach my whole life and defensively as well. When I was 13 years old, he was coaching me my whole life, he wanted to step back and just say hey I don’t want to put any pressure on you. It’s on you if you want a chance at pro ball. You certainly have a shot but you have to put in the work,” added Sweeney.

Sweeney and the Huskies host the St. Cloud Rox Tuesday evening at 6:35 PM.
