Duluth Amazon Warehouse Planned to Open by 2025

DULUTH, Minn. — The site that was once home to Duluth’s largest employer has been gearing up for new developments as online retail giant Amazon has been preparing for their step into the Northland.

The site was once home to U.S. Steel until the end of the 70s. Since then, the City of Duluth has been undergoing major redevelopment for hopes for future development on the once contaminated site. In January of this year, Amazon announced their investment in the space as well as other local nonprofits like Second Harvest.

The Duluth Chamber of Commerce is certain that the retail giant will bring a positive impact to our region’s economy. They believe the distribution center will provide upwards of 100 new jobs to the warehouse and would strengthen local small businesses.

“In addition to the obvious, the growth, the development, the jobs, and the economic impact that comes with this in many ways this could be a good thing for local businesses. Our chamber members, well beyond even Duluth and Northeast Minnesota and even Northwest Wisconsin, in the sense that when we hear from our members, many small businesses throughout the region they actually depend on Amazon to get some of the inventory, to get some of the supplies that they need,” said Daniel Fanning, the V.P. of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce. “Otherwise they might not be able to get locally. Of course we want people to support local, shop local when they can. But some of the more specific equipment that they get from the coast and beyond, they come from Amazon packages.”

Although the site is still under construction for Amazon’s new warehouse, the new distribution center is expected to open by 2025.
