Students Participate in Immersive 4-H Camp at UMD

DULUTH, Minn. — UMD is playing host to a 4-H STEM camp focusing on engineering.

6th through 10th graders from across the state are working with professors and UMD students at the Swenson College of Science and Engineering. They are doing hands-on science and engineering activities. The project on Thursday was on a water filtration system.

“We’re trying to make as clean water as possible and learn the best way to filter it and we were discussing how to filter water and discussing between groups which had the best results and which didn’t have so great results,” said Riley Von Linsow, 4-H student. “We’re going to have a lot of charcoal and make it so through the water goes through the charcoal really slowly. We’re going to have some macaroni and then like larger rocks getting to smaller rocks,” said Truman Nelson, 4-H student.

One part of the camp is getting the students used to a college.

“There are 6th graders through 10th graders here so, just getting them thinking about being on campus. Getting to see what professors do, what classrooms look like, dining hall, all that good stuff,” said Heidi Igo, STEM focused camp counselor.

The camp has been running for multiple years and is open to students are not yet members of 4-H.
