Duluth Kennel Club Holding Show for Pure Bred Dogs at the DECC

DULUTH, Minn. — The DECC has literally gone to the dogs this weekend. The Duluth Kennel Club is holding its all-breed show now through Sunday… and the public is invited and encouraged to come to the show.

When the title of the show says all breeds they mean it!  138 dog breeds are competing for recognition this weekend.  This is an AKC-certified event, meaning all the dogs are purebreds and the owners are expected to follow the ethics the American Kennel Club has estblished.

Caroline Lichty of the Duluth Kennel Club  is also the Chair of the Show . “They’re called preservation breeders in that they would like to preserve the breed they’re working with.  To make that dog, with this characteristic, look like the exact perfect dog.”

Erica Brookshire is a 3rd generation breeder of English Springer Spaniels, and her daughter is the fourth generation breeder. For more than 50 years her family has been breeding. This week she brought seven of her English Springer Spaniels to the show in one full-sized van.  Brookshire hopes people will come to the show, but she does have a request for people visiting.

“Please come, please interact with the dogs, the most important thing is just to ask that dog’s owner, handler, before you pet it or approach it,“ said Brookshire. “Sometimes it’s okay to pet them, sometimes they’re getting ready to go in the ring and they’re focused. But it’s great to have them come and interact with the dogs because the dog love it and it’s great for socializing the dogs”

All of the dogs are competing for the coveted Best of Show title.  There is an admission fee to go to the show, its $5 for adults $3 for children, and free for kids under three.
