Laura Schuler Officially Introduced as UMD Head Women’s Hockey Coach

Schuler's debut will come on September 21st at Ohio State.

DULUTH, Minn.- She’s spent a total of 10 seasons as a UMD women’s hockey assistant coach.

And on Thursday, Laura Schuler officially took over the top spot, becoming the 3rd head coach in program history.

Schuler was introduced during a press conference at Amsoil Arena.

It’s a full-circle moment as she was a finalist for the same position nine years ago.

Of course, the job would go to Maura Crowell, a person Schuler respects deeply and coached alongside with the past three seasons.

Schuler added that her coaching style is a lot similar to Crowell’s.

“Maura and I really saw the game the same way. So, that was awesome. Right away, when she brought me on board, we call it same page coaching. Her and I sat down with Laura Bellamy and the three of us just talked forever about hockey and what we feel is important and how to go about teaching and we were all on the same page from the very get-go. I would say that you’re going to continue to see a very similar team that you’ve always seen here at UMD,” said Schuler.

UMD Director of Athletics Forrest Karr was on hand to welcome Schuler. He explained why he felt she was the perfect fit to take over the program.

“Laura always treats athletes the right way. Her communication skills are outstanding. She has a plan for moving our program forward, including where she will recruit and how she will use resources to maximize success. I noticed these same qualities in other great coaches over the years,” added Karr.

Schuler’s debut will come on September 21st at Ohio State.
