Canadian Snowbirds Launch Free ‘Air Spectacular’ Over Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. — The Canadian Snowbirds swooped into Duluth Wednesday evening for a free show over Lake Superior — the Duluth Air Spectacular.

People were able to watch the show from the Lakewalk, the Rose Garden, at Fitger’s, and in Canal Park.

Nine aircraft from the Canadian Snowbirds showed off some impressive displays.  The city of Duluth was selected as one of the only four other cities chosen for this year’s free shows.

“It’s a great way to generate tourism in our community. And get a bunch of visitors in town,” said event organizer Ryan Kern of Kern and Company. “So, it’s a win-win that way. And it’s great seeing our Canadian friends from the north, having them come down as they’re celebrating 100 years of the Canadian Airforce.”

After the show, FOX 21 spoke with one of the Snowbirds pilots who said flying an aircraft is like second nature to him. That being said, the experience for a free show is different, like the one in Duluth.

“This is the best kind of show we’re able to do,” said Cpt. Richard MacDougall, Snowbird 11. “When we can do a free show for the community, we’re able to have anybody come by and see what we do. And that’s what we’re here to do — show the skilled professionalism and teamwork of the Canadian forces, and to just inspire the public.”

The Snowbirds puts on around 60 shows a year. During a show, the planes can reach speeds as fast as 464 mph and display more than 50 different formations.
