Duluth Shooting Incidents Down Significantly So Far In 2024

DULUTH, Minn. — There is good news about Duluth’s violent crime so far in 2024. It’s the lowest it’s been since before the pandemic.

FOX 21 recently requested a six-year breakdown of data from the Duluth Police Department involving shooting incidents through July.  The numbers show a steep decline in 2024 compared to the past five years.

As of July 25, Duluth has recorded five non-accidental shooting incidents, one of which involved an injury.  The other four had no injury or death.

When you compare the prior five years, there is a big difference.

In 2023, 26 non-accidental shooting incidents were reported through July 25, with one incident resulting in death.  Looking back to 2020, which was during the pandemic, Duluth police responded to an all-time-high of 40 non-accidental shooting incidents, with zero incidents resulting in death.

Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa released the following statement to FOX 21 when asked what could be contributing to the lower violent crime rate in 2024:

“The Duluth Police Department continues to be proactive in our policing and has a long history of being innovative and working with our partners. DPD is constantly looking at how we can work with our community to build partnerships for effective problem-solving and crime prevention. Our top priority has been and always will be the safety and security of all who live, work, and play within the City of Duluth.”
