Hermantown Football Ready for Another Tough Section Slate

Hermantown kicks off their regular season with the annual Hammer Game against Proctor on August 30th.

HERMANTOWN, Minn.- The Hermantown football team has come close to making it back to state tournament in recent years.

But, the wait from the 2018 season is still on.

Monday, marked the first step in the process towards achieving that goal, with the team holding their first practice of the year.

Mike Zagelmeyer returns to lead a veteran heavy Hawks squad that features quarterback Alex Schott, who’s entering his 3rd year as the starter.

Zagelmeyer says every year is different but the strength of their section remains the same.

“I think our section is going to be very tough this year. I really do. Obviously, North Branch knocked us off last year so they’re the team I think to beat right now. We know that there’s the Denfeld’s, Cloquet’s, Grand Rapids, and the Rock Ridge’s. Our section we think is one of the toughest in the state so we look forward to the challenge. I’m sure a lot of people have us circled on their schedule and there’s a few games that we’re looking forward to also,” said Zagelmeyer.

Another key returner for the Hawks is senior defensive tackle Mason Humphreys. He says he’s excited to share a leadership role this upcoming season.

“Kale Smith, he’s a really hard worker. Shows up to every work out, every day. Alex Schott, great role model, very vocal, so good guys to have. It’s an honor to be these guys role model. Hopefully they can look up to me as a hard worker and hopefully it will make them work hard,” said Humphreys.
