Minnesota State Fair Traditions

Saint Paul, Minn.– The Minnesota State Fair is a place where people can cap off their summer.
This year’s annual get together was definitely unique. Record breaking heat, and severe storms didn’t stop people from making the trip.

“We have to come to the fair every year. My dad loved coming, and we haven’t missed one yet, even during covid we got to go to the drive in,” said fair goer Diane Velie

“We love being with family, we always come out with family, don’t we girls!” smiled grandmother Judy Hawley

And with the regulars returning every year, they all have their must have stops. The stops could be on the sweeter side. Sweet Martha’s Cookies welcomes back visitors every year.

“We have to get the cookies. It’s my husband’s tradition, and my kid’s tradition. We can’t miss it. It’s the first thing we’ve eaten.” said Velie

The State Fair is known for offering crazy food catered to the foodies. Every year, they come up with different combinations that just somehow work. This year, they introduced deep fried ranch to their lineup.

“Well, I think it’s the honey sauce dipping sauce they have with it. That’s probably the best part. But it’s not all ranch, there’s cream cheese mixed in with it. So, it’s not all full ranch in your mouth.” explained fair goer Erin Youngkrantz

Green Mill also served up something unique this year. They had a cheese curd pizza stuffed pretzel. And it was clearly a hit!

“We sold record breaking amounts last year, and we brought it back by popular demand. We try and keep our brand strong in the community and be a part of the Big Minnesota Get Together.” said Michael Anderson, Green Mill Regional Manager.

Green Mill isn’t the only place in the fair to have strong bonds, there is an area that holds a great love for the past.
The Old Iron Block is dedicated to showcasing restoration projects, some being one hundred years old.

“Many people remember the machinery hill when they were a kid. How there were tractors and all sorts of machinery. And today there’s almost nothing except for this. So, people come by and tell us thank you for old engines, tractors and machinery.” said Jack Deschene, Supervisor of Old Iron Block

Some of those traditions people take part in, can be a little more fast paced. The Tilt O’ Whirl, and other amusement park rides brings families together every year.

“What did you just go on?” asked Hawley,

“The Tilt O Whirl!” replied her granddaughter, Caroline March.

“That’s all we’ve been on. We come to the fair two or three times every year. And we have since we were born!” said Hawley.

Whether your traditions for the state fair involve mechanics, food, or fun, it is no secret the true connections involved is what makes these memories so special.
