Vehicle Crashes into Duluth Elementary School Gymnasium
DULUTH, Minn. — A vehicle crashed into the gymnasium of Myers-Wilkens Elementary School in Duluth this morning, causing significant damage. No injuries to students or staff, but the two occupants of the vehicle were hospitalized for treatment.
At around 8:25 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13, Duluth Police responded to an incident involving a vehicle that crashed into the gymnasium of Myers-Wilkens Elementary School, located at 1027 N 8th Ave E.
Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle, carrying two passengers, failed to stop at a stop sign while traveling southbound on N 8th Ave E.
The car then skidded through the intersection, veered down an embankment, and collided with the exterior of the school’s gymnasium.
The impact caused substantial damage to the gym, but fortunately, no students or staff were present in the gym at the time of the accident.
The two occupants of the vehicle were taken to a local hospital by Mayo Ambulance for treatment.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and the School District is currently assessing the structural integrity of the damaged gym.
As a precaution, the gym will remain closed until further notice. Despite this, the school remains on SECURE protocol and is operating as usual within the building.
