Students Lace Up Shoes for “Walk to School Day”

DULUTH, Minn. — For many years, Congdon Park Elementary has participated in National Walk to School Day, which takes place the first Wednesday of October.

Students and families were encouraged to walk to school using the safest route, and learn safety tips while walking and crossing streets. The event also promoted health and exercise.

“I think kids these days spend a lot of time in front of screens, and so, incorporating physical activity into your daily routine like walking to and from school or to and from work, is a great way to get extra steps in and get some extra exercise,” said Katie Benziger, Congdon Park Elementary, PTA Member.

The Duluth School District was one of five Minnesota Schools to be granted funding for a Safe Routes to School Coordinator, who will serve the district through 2027.

“My big component and point for my position is the connection between the school district as well as working with the city and county officials to make sure we are making the routes as safe as possible for the Duluth Public School District,” said Andrea Heil, Safe Routes to School Coordinator for the Duluth Public School District.

Additionally, Safe Route Coordinators engage with families to gain insight on how routes can become safer for students.
