Duluth Marshall Boys Soccer State Bound for 2nd Straight Year
The Hilltoppers will look to go further than they did last year after falling in the quarterfinals.
DULUTH, Minn.- The Duluth Marshall boys soccer team is on to their 2nd straight state tournament.
It was somewhat of a cinderella finish to the section tournament for the Hilltoppers as they went into previously unbeaten Legacy Christian Academy and handed the Lions their 1st loss of the year, 1 to 0 in penalty kicks.
Head Coach Mike Sengbush says their defense has been huge for the team down the stretch. He also added that it’s something they’ll need to rely on as they get set to face bigger and better teams.
“This level, this point of the season, every team your facing they’re going to have a marquee scorer, marquee defender, marquee goalkeeper. We look forward to the challenge. We played St. Cloud Cathedral, which is either first or second in the state. We played right with them, it was a 2-1 loss. We understood that we had better opportunites but that’s where our focus is, putting the ball in the back of the net,” said Sengbush.
Even before they take the field there’s a sense of pride for Marshall as they go back-to-back.
“Obviously it feels great to be able to get to the tournament for another year in a row. It’s a good feat for this team and a small school like this. Going into the tournament, we’re going to understand what we’re capable of doing, which is winning. Any team at that tournament is capable of doing that. We’re going to work hard, play hard against whoever we get and hopefully we get a good result,” said forward Foster Schultz.
