Duluth Seawall Construction Update

DULUTH, Minn. — The Duluth Seawall Construction Project has been chugging along, and on Tuesday Fox 21 gotten an update on the progress.

The old seawall behind the DECC was failing leading to sinkholes and other issues, triggering the need for this project. The improved space will be much more resilient, enhance the connectivity between Bayfront and Canal Park, and bring more opportunities to have programs and events along the water. We spoke to the Construction Project Coordinator who said he’s excited to see it completed.

“We really beefed up the resiliency of the area. With the old seawall we experienced waves overtopping it which flooded the street and also caused problems for the Great Lakes Aquarium. And to help remedy that situation we actually raised the height of the wall itself, and as you can see, we’ve added wave return walls for those events where waves will overtop the actual seawall. We still have a secondary measure to keep water way from the street and the Great Lakes Aquarium,” said Robert Hurd.

The project is going according to schedule. Last year’s mild winter assisted that, as they were able to start part of the project earlier. It should be wrapped up around June 2025.
