Dayton Tours Highway 53 Relocation Project
Governor and other officials are impressed with the work being done.
Before the governor’s big meeting with Ely officials, he stopped by the construction of the rerouting of Highway 53.
MnDot built the original roadway in 1960 on land owned by mining interest groups with the agreement that if the mine needed the land, MnDot would move the road.
Work started in November and will hopefully wrap up sometime in 2017.
The bridge being built will be the tallest in Minnesota.
It goes up nearly 160 feet.
“You can hear it described but until you can actually experience it, the enormity, the incredible views and just the sheer size, it’s really daunting,” said Commissioner Zelle.
The entire estimated cost of the project is 160 million..
