Fishermen Stranded on Lake Superior in Duluth as Ice Breaks Apart
UPDATE: DULUTH, Minn. – The Duluth Fire Department says, in total, 26 anglers were rescued from Lake Superior off of the Beacon Pointe housing development Tuesday morning.
The fire department received the water emergency call just after 11:00 a.m.
According to the fire department, the large group had been fishing in individual ice houses when the ice they were on separated from the shore.
Four Quint arrived at the scene moments after the initial call and was able to bring three anglers to shore.
Rescue 1 arrived on the scene next and was able to bring another three fishermen to shore using a rapid deployment craft.
At this time 1 Tower crew arrived at the scene and used Marine 3 to rescue the final anglers from the original ice flow.
Reports say during the rescue an additional angler started to walk towards Park Point from Water Street and was rescued with an airboat by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Rescue Squad.
The Duluth Fire Department says within an hour the 26 anglers were rescued from the ice.
Crews from Headquarters, UMD, Woodland, and Lakeside responded to the call. The Duluth Police Department, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Coast Guard were also on scene.
No injuries were reported.
DULUTH, Minn.-At about 11 a.m., reports came in of ice fishermen being stranded on the ice on Lake Superior near Beacon Pointe Resort in Duluth.
Water was seen flowing between where they were ice fishing and the shoreline. It’s estimated there was between 20-30 people out on the ice who have now been rescued. Right now no injuries are being reported.
