Northern Star: Koy Nelson
Through the team's first 13 games, Nelson's averaging a career-high 11.7 points per game.
DULUTH, Minn.- St. Scholastica guard Koy Nelson continues to make strides during his junior campaign.
Through the team’s first 13 games, he’s averaging a career-high 11.7 points per game.
Nelson says that’s not possible without his training leading up to the season.
“Off-season work forsure. Getting in the weight room. That was a big thing freshman year, I was a little smaller, undersized. So just being in the weightroom and then continuing to shots throughout the summer. Coming in when practice isn’t going, just getting extra shots up,” said Nelson
Doing the necessary work leading up to gametime.
“Koy’s a playmaker. He does a lot of great things. He sees the court very well. He’s a great basketball player and an amazing human being. As a coach, he’s definitely someone you want in the locker room and represent your program and school,” added interim head coach Christian Butler.
Being that Nelson is the only junior on the roster. He’s set to take on a big leadership role next season.
“He’s a little soft spoken. He’ll speak one on one rather than the whole team. That’s something we’re trying to get him more comfortable with is being more vocal in front of the team. He’s definitely had such a high IQ and the team knows that. So a lot of guys respect his opinion and listen to him and ask for advice,” said Butler.
A responsibility that the Port Wing native is looking forward to.
“I just want to be known as a good teammate and at the end of the day, just be a guy who’s a friend but will also hold you accountable. That being lead by example or lead by vocally. Either one, I just want to be a good thing for this team,” added Nelson.
Nelson and the Saints are next in action on Saturday at Gustavus Adolphus.
