Ely Woman Identified in Fatal Motorized Scooter Fire, Smoking Likely Cause
ELY, Minn. — Smoking is believed to have caused a deadly motorized scooter fire that took the life of an 80-year-old woman in Ely.
The victim, Marjorie Jane Hible, was a resident of the Boundary Waters Care Facility in Ely when the incident happened.
On January 6, a all for help came in at 4:38 p.m., reporting that Hible and her motorized scooter were fully engulfed in flames.
Staff were able to get her off the scooter before she was rushed to Ely Hospital and later airlifted to Duluth, where she passed away.
Authorities believe smoking was the cause of the fire.
One staff member was treated for minor injuries.
