‘Another Door’ Shelter For Young People Opening In Duluth
DULUTH, Minn.– A new shelter for young adults in Duluth is receiving its final touches, and they’re eager to begin helping the community.
The site is located at Peace Church and is operated by Lutheran Social Services.
Another Door emergency shelter will provide short-term emergency housing for people ages 18-24.
The facility is offering 12 units, equipped with beds and everything needed for a fresh start.
The project was a collaboration effort thanks to ‘Stepping on Up’ and its 14 community partners.
Organizers told FOX 21 shelter is a step in the right direction to combating the homelessness epidemic.
“We realize one of the areas where we can make the greatest impact is addressing homelessness among young people. To catch young people in that first episode or early episode of homelessness and provide them with the support that they need. To thrive and find stable lives and housing,” said Joel Kilgour, Project Manager for ‘Stepping on Up’.
Another Door is aiming to be as cozy and home-like as possible.
Every person that moves in receives a welcome basket and tools to get on the right track.
“One of the things when the youth come in from being homeless is they need a time for decompression. So really to be in a space that gives them their own bedroom. And kind of a living space that allows them to relax and decompress is really important. And once they get through that process, we can kind of begin our kind of intensive case management,” said Colleen Kelly, Program Director for Lutheran Social Services.
Another Door is set to open on Jan. 21.
