Former UMD Head Football Coach Bob Nielson Retires After 32 Years of Coaching

Nielson led the Bulldogs from 1999 to 2012, winning a national title in 2008 and 2010.

DULUTH, Minn.- Former UMD head football coach Bob Nielson is calling it a career.

On Thursday, he announced after 32 years of coaching, including the last nine seasons at the University of South Dakota, that he is stepping down with plans to retire.

Nielson led the Bulldogs from 1999 to 2012, winning a national title in 2008 and 2010.

After the 2012 season, he went on to coach at Western Illinois before landing in South Dakota.

Nielson had 239 career wins.
