Woman Shot, Killed by Police after Standoff in Aitkin County
A 50-year-old Aitkin woman was shot and killed after firing shots at police Tuesday night.
The Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office was called around 4:30 p.m. to do a welfare check on a woman.
Authorities located the woman’s vehicle about an hour later and began talking to her. They say the woman was armed and threatened to harm herself.
Police say the woman fired shots towards them on at least two different occasions.
Officers returned fire, striking the woman.
She was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, where she later died.
The woman’s body was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office for formal identification and an autopsy.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the incident.
