New Permanent Housing Facility Opens in Duluth
DULUTH, Minn. — A new permanent housing facility has been completed in Duluth, providing housing to single adults who have experienced homelessness.
Plover Place is owned and operated by the Duluth Salvation Army.
One Roof Housing developed and constructed the two buildings, which consists of 24 units. Four of those units are reserved for veterans and each building has a handicap accessible unit.
The buildings are permanent housing, open for long or short term living.
“This is permanent supportive housing, this isn’t transitional, this isn’t overnight. This is going to be these people’s homes. And if they choose to stay there for the rest of their lives, or they’re like listen, I just need a place where I can stay as long as I need and address some problems, and they’re like, I’m going to move out, perfect. So it gives us that ability,” said Capt. Anthony Nordan, Duluth Salvation Army.
Each building also has a communal living space and shared kitchen and laundry rooms.
“We need to provide places for folks to live that are dignified, and comfortable and durable, and healthy right. So balancing that and trying to cut costs and build something that is smaller in size was one of the puzzles that we worked to come up with this project,” said Jeff Corey, Executive Director of One Roof Housing.
Plover Place is also a part of Stepping on Up’s five-year plan to end unsheltered homelessness.
Salvation Army hopes to get people moving in at the start of February. Staff will be on hand 24/7, supporting the transition into permanent living.
